In Belgium, we have two kinds of ways of paying PhD students. One is a bursary, which is untaxed. The other is a salary, which is taxed. I got a 1099-MISC from the university. In this form, ONLY box 3 shows the other income, and others remain $0.00 or blank. In order to be eligible, your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) must be less than $75,000 and you must be attending graduate school at least half-time.
